When you’re on the go, finding time for a healthy breakfast can be hard.
Your rush to work, school, or getting the kids out the door often leaves you with little time or energy to cook a big meal. So you might choose a quick bowl of sugary cereal, or maybe nothing at all.
But starting your day with a nutritious breakfast is essential. It can give you the energy and focus you need to meet the day’s responsibilities and help you make better food choices later in the day.
So what’s a busy person to do?
Breakfast Toasts
There are so many healthy and delicious things you can put on toast, and it’s a great way to get in some nutrients without having to cook a big meal.
Think beyond just spreading on some butter or jam. Add combinations such as:
- avocado, tomatoes, and ground flax seed
- peanut butter, banana, and chia seeds
- tomato, basil, and spinach
- fresh berries and nuts
Instead of plain white bread, find a whole grain variety for an extra nutritional benefit.
Fruity Smoothies
Fruit smoothies are another great on-the-go breakfast option, and they can be as simple or complex as you’d like, with whatever fruits and vegetables you have on hand.
If you’re short on time, throw some frozen fruit into the blender with some milk or juice and call it done.
Or, add some yogurt, oats, or nut butter for a more filling meal.
You can even sneak in some veggies, like carrots, kale, or spinach.
Fruit Salads
When you blend up fruit for a smoothie, you lose out on the fiber that whole fruit provides.
So a better option might be a fruit salad.
Just chop up any of your favorite fruits and mix them together.
You can add a bit of yogurt or honey for extra flavor. And sprinkle on some nuts or seeds for a crunchy texture and extra nutrition.
Breakfast Oats
Oatmeal is an excellent breakfast choice because it’s filling, easy to make, and can be customized with whatever toppings you like.
You can cook it quickly on the stovetop or make a big batch ahead of time and reheat it in the microwave during the week.
Top your oats with cinnamon, honey, fresh or dried fruit, nuts and seeds, nut butter, yogurt, or any other flavorful combination you can think of.
Or you can prepare some oatmeal bars or oat bread if you have some time the night before.
On-the-go breakfasts don’t have to be unhealthy. With just a little bit of planning at the grocery, you can make sure you’re starting your day off right with something that is both delicious and healthful.
